By Amal Al Riyami — NIZWA: Jan 16 - The Nizwa Hospital recently carried out a disaster and crisis management drill to gauge the hospital’s readiness in dealing with emergency situations. The drill was carried out in collaboration with the Civil Defence and Ambulance Department of Al Dakhiliyah and Nizwa College of Technology. It was carried out in coordination with the Directorate General of Health Services in Al Dakhiliyah and the Ministry of Health. Captain Mohsen bin Saif al Bosafi, field commander of the exercise, said: “The exercise was part of the methods adopted by the General Authority of Civil Defence and Ambulance to measure the level of performance and raise the quality of firefighters and specialised teams’ performance.”

The exercise consisted of an “imaginary explosion” at the Nizwa College of Technology that led to the “collapse” of a building and “injuries” to many students. The college immediately informed the Civil Defence, which rescued the “injured” and shifted them to Nizwa Hospital. On learning about the incident from the Civil Defence, the hospital activated an “emergency plan” and extended all the necessary help in dealing with the situation and provided care for patients inside as well as outpatients. The hospital informed the Central Committee at the General Directorate of Health Services in Al Dakhiliyah which, in turn, communicated with the medical response and public health central sector at the Ministry of Health. A special team was deployed to assess the degree of seriousness of every “patient” and provided them with appropriate treatment.
