A new grade of fuel, Ultimax, was launched by Oman Oil with a higher Octane rating (M98) in Muscat, even as the company is preparing for an era of electric vehicles in the country. The fuel is priced at 266 baisa per litre. Speaking to the Observer, David Kalife, CEO of Oman Oil Marketing Company, said: “There has been a demand for a higher quality fuel. Ultimax, a new-generation product with Octane 98, is expected to give more power, fuel efficiency and help the engine last longer due to better combustion, thereby helping save fuel.” The product will initially be launched at Mazoon Street, Bausher, Halban Expressway and Ghala Expressway service stations and extended to more fuel stations depending on the demand.

On the need for a high-cost fuel amid reports of an electric car revolution, Kalife said: “According to our projections, by 2025, electric vehicles will represent 10-15 per cent of the total number of cars in the market. It means 85 per cent of vehicles will still be running on conventional fuel.” Oman Oil, he said, is studying the demand for electric cars in Oman. “We find the market is still not ready for it. We will have electric charging stations as when there is a demand.” Kalife said the product will be sourced from Orpic and it can used in all types of vehicles. “We aim to continuously surpass the expectations of our consumers by providing the latest products. We have catered to all segments by offering diesel, M91, M95 and now the Ultimax fuel.

“The introduction of this high-Octane rating fuel will allow motorists to drive greater distances with cleaner fuel and help them maintain the health of their cars,” said the company’s statement. For two months, every customer purchasing Ultimax worth RO 10 will be eligible to take part in a raffle draw every 30 days and get a chance to win 90 fuel cards of RO 25 each. Additional giveaways include smartphones and gym memberships. Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Under-Secretary, Ministry of Oil and Gas, told Oman Arabic, sister publication of the Observer in a telephone call that, unlike the two other types of fuel, Octane (98) won’t be subject to monthly review by the committee tasked with determining the prices of fuel, adding that it is dispensable and won’t be on high demand.
