MUSCAT: A new syndrome relating to thyroid disease has been identified by a team of doctors at Sultan Qaboos University led by Professor Nicholas Woodhouse.

The new discovery will simplify the way patients presenting with this disease are investigated, saving unnecessary and time-consuming tests and expenditure.

Euthyroid athyroxinemia is a rare disorder but this breakthrough will help to determine its incidence worldwide. Professor Woodhouse said. “This was a most exciting moment and I would like to thank my co-authors Drs Omayma Elshafie and Fatima Bahowairath for their invaluable help. In addition, I would also like to thank the Sultan Qaboos University administration for their unwavering support over the last quarter century.”

Professor Woodhouse has worked at Sultan Qaboos University for 25 years and recently received the Ibn Sina Award from the Gulf Chapter of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists for distinguished service and for his outstanding contribution in the field of Diabetes and Endocrinology.

Professor Woodhouse is an Omani citizen and was awarded an Order of the British Empire in 2011 for services to Medicine in the Middle East.
