Nepal may lift ban on domestic helps; MoU on cards

MUSCAT, Feb 5 - Nepal may consider allowing its women workforce to enter the GCC countries to work as domestic helps, according to the country’s diplomatic mission in Oman.

This might be allowed once a memorandum of understanding (MoU), which is currently under preparation, is signed. Nepal stopped allowing women from taking up jobs of maids two years ago in countries that do not have an agreement with it. At present, only Jordan has such a pact with Nepal in the region.

“We have submitted concerns of our workforce as well as the potential employers in Oman to our Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” said Sarmila Parajuli Dhakal, Ambassador of Nepal to the Sultanate. “We are expecting a proactive response on this from the authorities concerned back home,” she said. The restriction applies only to the new employees. Those currently employed in the GCC are not allowed re-entry as there is an existing ban on their employment abroad.

“We have taken up this matter with our ministry.

It will be sorted out soon. We expect the ban to be lifted soon as we are finalising an MoU with Oman, which will be signed by both parties in the near future,” said Sarmila.

Both Oman and Nepal recently held a meeting at the Ministry of Manpower to discuss a proposed MoU covering cooperation in labour and training, attended by a five-member committee headed by Dr Ram Prasad Ghimire, Joint Secretary of Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security of Nepal, and Oman’s Ministry of Manpower.

The MoU covers securing the rights and welfare of both workers and employers pursuant to prevailing laws of both countries.
