Nearly 500 people arrested for begging in 2018

The Ministry of Social Development (MOSD  said that 499 beggars were arrested during the first four months of 2018.

Of these, 60 beggars arrested were Omanis, including 46 men and 14 women, figures released by the ministry said.

It added 285 of 439 non-Omani beggars arrested were men.

MOSD said as per Article 297 of the Omani Penal Code, “A penalty of not less than one month and not more than one year and a fine of not less than RO50 and not more than RO100 will be will be imposed on persons found begging in mosques, roads or places and commercial centres.”
