By Lakshmi Kothaneth — MUSCAT: Feb. 26 - The National CEO Programme (NCP) will start receiving applications for its third cohort from Sunday midnight. An initiative from the Diwan of the Royal Court through the Institute of Capability Development (ICD) in cooperation with the Public Private Partnership (PPP) task force, NCP seeks to shift the Sultanate’s economy from dependence on commodities to reliance on talent by growing a community of innovation business leadership practice.

Director-General of Administrative Development at the Diwan of Royal Court, Dr Khamis al Toobi, the acting Director-General of the Institute for Capability Development, said with Cohort 3, NCP will manage to qualify 100 Omani CEOs who can play a role at the world-class level.

To qualify for the programme, the applicant must be an Omani national, must be a degree-holder, have at least eight years of experience and basic efficiency in English language. Training is delivered in English.

“Our aim is to train 100 CEOs. But are they going to be more than 100, we leave it to the team of PPP — Sharaqa Task Force.

They are the ones who initiated the programme and they are the ones who will decide. Expectations from the programme are high and we are happy our expectations are being met,” said Dr Khamis.

He said their aim is to see these 100 CEOs playing a role in the private sector, either economic or social. In addition, a forum is going to be established in the near future by the Diwan of the Royal Court.

It will have graduates from CEOs, and leadership and competitiveness programmes for the government, in addition to some select businessmen and women in the Sultanate.

“They can meet from time to time, bring in new ideas, and discuss opportunities and difficulties they can resolve,” said Dr Khamis.

At least eight of the programme graduates have been posted as CEOs in 2016, while many have become entrepreneurs.

There are six learning units, with two in Switzerland and one in Singapore.

Applicants must have letters from employers allowing them to attend the programme. The programme is for 36 days (seven weeks), but the group projects will go on for a year. Applicants must also be ready for practical training, the officials said.

Out of the total applicants, 60 candidates will be chosen to go through the screening stage. On April 23, 35 of the selected candidates will be announced.

Tests are conducted at the beginning, middle and the end of NCP to measure impact of the programme, said Dr Richard Kemp, Director, National CEO Programme.

“What is interesting is people do change. They talk about seeing the world differently and listening in a new way. They not only become more confident, but also become visionaries. They start seeing a future in a different perspective and begin to notice different people with talent around them, and see a potential in improving their talent and coaching them then so much more can be achieved.

They become service-minded. They stop being egoistical,” said Dr Kemp.

Applications for the programme can be submitted on www.ceo.om
