By Vinod Nair — MUSCAT: Feb 4 - Motorsports events and some of the sideshows organised as part of the Muscat Festival added to the flavour to the festival. Many people hoped that there should be more such contribution from the private retail sector in the sultanate. The motorpsorts and drifting events at Oman Automobile Association were such examples. Despite being at an isolated destination compared from both Amerat and Naseem parks, people attended the shows in large numbers. The drifting and other related contests were very competitive.

Events at City Centres and Muscat Grand Malls also got good response from the visitors. “I agree that the retail sector should take special initiatives as it will ease the pressure of the Muscat Festival organising committee. Right now they are event sponsors and put up stalls. They should have their own initiatives and incentives for public as it will help the organising committee to focus on the cultural element,” said a coordinating official of the festival at Naseem Park.  “With the oil prices going up, we can hope to have better coordinated efforts next year,” he said.

“I was really excited about the folk dances and music. Took video of most of them and hope to use them as ring tones,” said Sreejesh, an expatriate who was visiting the festival with his family.

Many visitors recalled the global shopping village that was the main highlight of the Muscat Festival years ago. “The size of the shopping stalls is getting smaller every year. I remember there used to be stalls selling special African craftwork and products from countries such as Thailand, Malaysia and even India among others,” said Adil al Balushi, who was visiting the venue from Sohar. “I am told the rentals for stalls are expensive but at the same it is the place where people come under one roof. So it should be attractive marketplace for products, awareness campaigns and promotions,” Adil said.
