MUSCAT, JAN 20 - The Royal Oman Police (ROP) on Sunday said that the Criminal Court in Al Seeb has issued a judgment in a case related to fraud, sexual abuse and witchcraft.
Regarding the case, Lt Col Ahmad bin Ali al Rawas, Director of the Department of Criminal Investigation in Muscat, said: “Because of the direct impact on the individual’s dignity and reputation in society, such cases are not reported by the victims though they happen at regular intervals.”
As these cases go unreported for fear of shame, the perpetrators are encouraged to continue with their activities and trap more victims.
Giving details, the head of the Department of Investigation said that most of the victims were given promises on bringing luck in their lives, marriages, child births, prosperity in the livelihood, and solutions to mental and psychological diseases.
In most cases, victims do not report such matters to their parents or other family members, leading to possibilities of marital discords, including divorce, family quarrels and disintegration.
The accused in the case was convicted for violating Article 257 of the Penal Code and also for the offence committed under Article 349 of the same law.
The sentence includes imprisonment for five years in one case and an imprisonment for one year with a fine of RO 300 in the second case. Both penalties will be combined and the severe one will be imposed on the accused.
He will also be liable to pay charges incurred for the legal procedures.
