New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Tuesday discussed their countries’ bilateral strategic partnership as well as regional security and the fight against terrorism. The leaders met at New Delhi’s Hyderabad House a day before US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was due to hold talks in the Indian capital.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ghani discussed a range of bilateral, regional and global issues, express firm resolve to end menace of terrorism,” Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman Raveesh Kumar said on Twitter.
Modi and Ghani also discussed ways to further a “shared objective or promoting security and stability in Afghanistan” which has seen the resurgence of the Taliban in recent months.
Ghani also met President Ram Nath Kovind, who condemned deadly terrorist attacks in the country that claimed 200 lives in recent days.
Tillerson, who had already met Ghani in Afghanistan on Monday, was due to reach New Delhi on Tuesday night from Pakistan.
On Wednesday, he is due to hold talks with Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj on US President Donald Trump’s new strategy for South Asia that focuses on fighting extremist groups and stabilising the situation in Afghanistan. — dpa
