MUSCAT: The Sultanate, represented by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) will mark today the World Metrology Day (WMD) 2018 which falls on May 20. Zahrah bint Ali al Siyabi, Head of the Measurement and Calibration Laboratory at the Directorate-General of Standards and Metrology at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, said that the Sultanate has become part of this umbrella after the issuance of the National Law for Measurement and Calibration No 34/1995.

As per this law, the measurements units in the Sultanate should be as per the international unit systems. She added that selecting ‘Constant Evolution of the International System of Units’ as the theme for this year stresses the constant development and changes in measurement science. “World Metrology Day is an annual event to mark the signing of the Metre Convention on May 20,1875 by representatives of 17 countries. “The convention aimed at standardising measurement all over the world. The convention contributed to cancelling a number of measurement units which were used randomly and caused a lot of disruption to business and industrial transactions in various countries’, she added. — ONA
