Ministry staff urged to inculcate walking habit

By Fahad Al Ghadani — MUSCAT: March 6 - To enhance healthy walking habit, a circular was issued by the Directorate General of Health Service in the Governorate of North Batinah calling its staff to allot one hour for walking.


The circular was issued to the heads of medical centres in the governorate. The circular states that all the staff are urged to walk 500 metres in an hour once a week. The circular also clarified that the hour allotted for walking should be well selected to avoid any clash with peak period of work. The move was initiated to spread awareness among public on the importance of walking. The circular states that such a move will be taken as a sample by public and better enhance the healthy habit in the community.


The circular news went viral on social media. Several voices went up calling for different government units and private sector companies to follow the same and enhance healthy habit among their staff.


Recently, the first “walking activity” took place on March 3 as part of the National Campaign to Promote Physical Activity.


Starting from Kalbooh Park to Riyam, the walk is aimed at raising public awareness on the importance of physical activity and encouraging the community to be involved in it.


The participation was open for all. Organised by the Ministry of Health, it included many activities such as awareness talks, health advice, free testing of blood sugar, weight and blood pressure, distribution of free caps and T-shirts, besides motivation contests.
