By Staff Reporter — MUSCAT:  March 19 - The Middle East Desalination Research Centre (MEDRC), a water research hub based at Al Hail in Muscat Governorate, is marking ‘World Water Day’ on Wednesday, March 22, with a series of activities. An annual event with a different theme in focus every year, this year’s World Water Day seeks to bring water to the top of the agenda. This year’s focus is on wastewater and provides the opportunity to highlight the important symbiosis between water and wastewater, in the search for sustainable solutions to water scarcity.

In keeping with its own mission of working to find solutions to water scarcity, MEDRC Water Research will organise a day of celebrations and activities at their headquarters in Al Hail.

MEDRC Centre Director Ciarán Ó Cuinn will inaugurate a session of presentations by experts and key stakeholders on March 22 at MEDRC Water Research Centre, Al Hail.

The keynote speaker is the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, while representatives of Haya Water, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, NAFAS International LLC and Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) will address the event as well.

Also as part of the day’s activities, there will be a series of alumni lectures planned at the Al Hail facility. Since 1996, MEDRC Water Research has supported over 170 Water Research Projects. These projects include Master’s and PhD Water Research Fellowships awarded to talented young researches both locally, regionally and internationally.

On March 22, three members of the MEDRC Alumni have been invited to attend the official presentations and will deliver a lecture each. The members hail from Oman (SQU), Palestine (An-Najah National University) and Jordan (Jordan University of Science and Technology).

To highlight World Water Day 2017, MEDRC employee Hilmi al Kindi, well known for undertaking gruelling walking challenges, will complete a 4-day walk (extending from March 19-22) from Sifah Hotel wastewater treatment plant to MEDRC office.

He will complete the last leg of his journey on World Water Day itself, and will arrive to a rousing reception at MEDRC. This event is sponsored by Gloria Jeans and supported by Muriya. Rounding off the day’s events is an art competition that saw teams from two local schools designing a mural based on the World Water Day theme. Al Awael Private School was declared the winner.

The winning team will be invited on March 22 to paint their mural on the Centre’s Garden Terrace Wall.
