MUSCAT: As part of Earth Day celebrations, the Environmental Club of Modern College of Business and Science (MCBS) organised a presentation on the significance of the marine environment on March 21 at the college campus. The presentation was given by Dr Adnan bin Rashid al Azri, the Ambassador at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a consultant on the Oman Continental Shelf Extension Project.

Dr Adnan, in his presentation titled “Marine Environment: A Source or Sink of Pollutants & the Role of Human Beings”, discussed the crucial role played by the marine environment in sustaining life on the planet, and how over the years the marine environment has become polluted and degraded mainly as a result of humans’ unsustainable consumerist approach to their environment.

Following the presentation, there was a discussion and Q&A session, where students and other guests had an informative interaction with the speaker.

Dr Adnan holds a master’s degree in Ocean Sciences from Florida Institute of Technology, USA and a PhD in Biogeochemistry from UK. An Associate Professor at the Sultan Qaboos University, Dr Adnan has published several scientific papers and received recognition from Nasa in 2014 for his paper which was chosen among the best papers in 2014 using Nasa data. He was also featured in a recently published book called, Achievements of Omanis Locally and Internationally.

Modern College celebrates Earth Day every year, with influential campaigns and seminars aimed at creating heightened awareness about the importance of the environment and the need for students to be actively involved in initiatives designed to protect the fragile environment.
