Muscat, Aug 6 - There has been a significant fall in the maternal mortality rate thanks to the rapid all-round advancements in healthcare sector.

Maternal mortality rate has slid by nearly 45 per cent in the past two decades, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).

Oman has witnessed a 70-per cent fall in child mortality in the last three decades, says Dr Fatima al Hinai, Director, Women and Child Health Department at the ministry.

Speaking to the Observer on the sidelines of the announcement of Birth Spacing initiative along with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Al Hinai said that all these steps have helped Oman achieve the MDG4 (Millennium Development Goals).

The average fertility rate per woman has come down to 3.2 from the 1980’s rate of 10 per woman contributing to the mental and physical health of Omani women. This has also enabled women to take part in the nation-building process along with their male counterparts.

“The major reasons behind this are firstly, embracing of modern life, development of modern health science that has helped wipe out most of the communicable diseases, and advanced healthcare facilities at all levels in the country,” she added.
