MUSCAT, Feb 25 -

The Iraqi expatriate community held a charity bazaar at the Qurum beach, just behind Crepe Café in Jawharat Al Shatti to raise funds for the Oman Cancer Association (OCA) here on Saturday.

Hala from OCA said this was the first time that community members had decided to do a fund-raising event for cancer.

The money was mostly raised through the auction of paintings by Iraqi artists and through the sale of “Freedom Pigeons”.

Community members were required to buy captive pigeons for whatever price they thought fit and then set the birds free.

“We do not tell community members how much money they ought to spend for a freedom pigeon. It is entirely up to them to decide the price of the “Freedom Pigeons”. But because they know that the flight of the pigeons is for a good cause, they are spending with a big heart,” said Hala.

There was music and dancing as well together with other snacks, food and ice-cream. The balmy weather on the beach was the perfect setting for this wonderful charity event.
