International Day of Persons with Disabilities marked

MUSCAT: The Ministry of Social Development organised on Wednesday at the Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA), a ceremony on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which is celebrated by countries around the world each year in December.


Sayyid Saud bin Hilal al Busaidy, Minister of State and Governor of Muscat, sponsored the ceremony in the presence of Shaikh Mohammed bin Said al Kalbani, Minister of Social Development, and a number of state officials.


The ceremony included a documentary about the services provided by the ministry to persons with disabilities.


Hilal bin Mohammed al Abri, Director- General of the Directorate General of Persons with Disabilities, in his speech said that the Sultanate witnessed during the past four decades under the guidance of His Majesty expanding quantitative and qualitative development in caring and rehabilitation services provided through the Ministry of Social Development, in achievement of the comprehensive social integration in light of the blessed Renaissance and the transition in the policy and performance of the ministry gradually from the caring concept to the development concept based on partnership and empowerment.


The ceremony also included the signing of an agreement between the ministry and Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel). Omantel will provide financial support of RO 50,000 to Al Aman Centre of the Ministry of Social Development to finance and develop the services provided by the Center for Persons with Disabilities.


Sayyid Saud al Busaidy also honoured outstanding persons with disabilities for 2016, supporting and collaborating families with the ministry in rehabilitation programmes and individuals, public and private entities that support services and rehabilitation programmes for this year. — ONA
