Industrial Excellence winners honoured

Assigned by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, Dr Madeeha bint Ahmed al Shaibaniyah, Minister of Education, on Sunday patronised over an honouring ceremony for winners of the Sultan Qaboos Award for Industrial Excellence 2017-2018 at Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Sultan Qaboos Award for Industrial Excellence is organised every two years to contribute to the development of the Omani industry. The current version includes 19 industrial establishments from different governorates of the Sultanate.


The evaluation of industrial establishments focused on a range of criteria, including leadership, production process, manufacturing process, customer relationship, employee safety and the work environment, its contribution to social responsibility and innovation in manufacturing processes, industrial and financial performance of the plant and marketing of the product.


Oman Fiber Optic Company won the Sultan Qaboos Award for Industrial Excellence 2017-2018 for the category of companies with sales of RO 10 million.


Oman Flour Mills won the category of companies whose sales range between RO 10 million and RO 50 million.


Oman Cement Company won the award for the category of companies with sales exceeding RO 50 million.


Jindal Steel and Power Company won the award for the most innovative companies category.


The Minister of Education affirmed that the Omani industrial enterprises have received great attention from the government.


The Sultan Qaboos Award for Industrial Excellence comes as a tribute to the industrial facilities, which proved their ability to compete in the local, regional and international markets, which reflect the efficiency of the Omani industrial sector.


She pointed out that the industrial sector falls under the concepts of innovation, as well as the practical dimension of curricula. These aspects are covered. The education strategy focused on the innovative dimensions of education.


The Ministry of Education carried out a science festival, which was in partnership with the private sector and among the sectors that participated is the industrial sector.


The honouring ceremony was attended by their highnesses, ministers, under-secretaries, members of the State Council, members of Majlis Ash’shura and officials concerned with the industrial sector in the public and private sectors, industrialists and businessmen and businesswomen.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Sunday organised a meeting with Dr Ali bin Masoud al Sunaidy, on the occasion of the Omani Industry Day, which falls on February 9 each year, as part of commemoration of the visit of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos to Al Rusayl Industrial Estate on February 9, 1991.


The meeting reviewed the most important developments and discussed the challenges faced by the industrial sector and the requirements of the next stage to increase the contribution of the industrial sector to the GDP and push the wheel of development and economy.


The Minister of Commerce and Industry said that the preliminary data indicate that the industrial sector has regained growth by the end of 2017 compared to 2016.


The number of industrial companies listed on Muscat Securities Market (MSM) by the end of 2017 stood at 42 with a trading volume amounted to RO 6.791 billion.


He added that the existing projects in the industrial estates of the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (PEIE) provided by the end of 2017 more than 55,800 jobs, including about 19,000 jobs for Omanis, constituting 35 per cent.


He pointed out that the proportion of Omanis working directly in the industrial sector in general is still below the expected level, where the sector registered about 26,000 Omanis out of about 250,000 employees. The minister responded to questions and queries raised by the industrialists on Omanisation in the industrial sector and the use of modern technology in the management and operation of factories, as well as the expansion of mining industries. — ONA
