Muscat: There is an immediate need for intervention and cooperation from all stakeholders with over 40 cases of dengue reported in Oman, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) on Monday.

According to  Dr Fatima al Ajamiya, Director General of Health Services in Muscat, "The campaign extending to 14 days will cover around 4,000 houses in the capital with the help of 1,000 volunteers."

She added that the campaign itself is not a solution, but will help raise awareness about the seriousness of the spread of mosquitoes with people.

Dr Ahmed Mohammed al Saeedi, Minister of Health said, " During this campaign it is necessary to individually visit homes because if the epidemic is not eliminated in a record time, there will be serious consequences for public health."

The two-week campaign against Aedes aegypti, the virus that carries the disease, is being organised under the theme ‘Your Cooperation Indicates Your Awareness’.

MOH and Muscat Municipality have urged residents and citizens take part in the campaign that will be held from January 8-21.

It also urged to people take correct information from reliable sources and communicate with the contact centre of the Ministry of Health in the event of detection of any symptoms of the dengue or yellow fever.

The Aedes aegypti is found in urban areas, especially in man-made water tanks, MOH statement said.
