Hutchison Ports Sohar, which operates and manages the Container Terminal at the Port of Sohar, is on track to handling its 3 millionth TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) — a measure used for capacity in container transportation — by the end of this year.

The announcement came at a gala dinner hosted by the operator to celebrate 12 years of successful operations at the industrial port. The event was held under auspices of Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Futaisi, Minister of Transport and Communications. Also presents were various government and public sector stakeholders, partners and clients from the supply chain industry.

Hutchison Ports Sohar (formerly Oman International Container Terminal OICT) commenced commercial operations in Oman in 2006 from Terminal B at the Port of Sohar, later moving to Terminal C in 2014.

Addressing the gathering, Albert Pang, Chief Executive Officer — Hutchison Ports Sohar, said; “As we celebrate the completion of 12 years, I am proud to say that we have made our dreams come true and have new ones now. In addition to the accumulated volume of Terminal B over the years, Terminal C is going to handle the 3 millionth TEU in the last quarter of this year. Since the start of Terminal C, we have achieved double digit percentages of volume growth year-on-year, ahead of the average growth rate in the Middle East region and globally.”

“As an exclusive container terminal in Port of Sohar, we have already progressed from being a way port to one of the major hub port in the region. This is proven by the number of long haulage direct calls that we receive at Port of Sohar. Not only calls from Middle East and Fast East, we also started receiving direct calls from the United States from the end of August,” Pang added.

On the occasion, Hutchison Ports Sohar presents mementos to stakeholders and customers for their unwavering and strong support throughout the last decade. Recipients included senior officials and executives of various ministries, Royal Oman Police Customs, shipping lines, traders and other supply chain members.

Hutchison Ports Sohar is a joint-venture between Hutchison Ports, the Government of the Sultanate of Oman, Steinweg of the Netherlands and a number of well-established Omani investors.

Hutchison Ports Sohar is a modern container-handling facility capable of accommodating the latest generation of mega-vessels.

Hutchison Ports Sohar is a member of Hutchison Ports, the port and related services division of CK Hutchison Holdings Limited (CK Hutchison). Hutchison Ports is the world’s leading port investor, developer and operator with a network of port operations in 52 ports spanning 26 countries throughout Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, the Americas and Australasia
