Huawei has officially unveiled its newest “intelligence machines” Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro which are sleek, gorgeous and equipped with just about everything you can expect from a 2017 flagship smartphone. But unlike most other phones, their differentiating factor is artificial intelligence. Both phones are equipped with the new lightning-fast Kirin 970 octa-core processor, which is integrated with what Huawei calls as Neural Network processing units.

Huawei says the noticeable benefits of this AI-powered chip is more efficient battery consumption and better images. One example is real-time scene and object recognition, which uses AI to identify what’s being captured — like stage, person, or even dog, as CNET notes — and adjust the camera to get the best image out of it.

“As we enter the age of intelligence, AI is no longer a virtual concept but something that intertwines with our daily life,” said Richard Yu, CEO of the Huawei Consumer Business Group, in a statement. “AI can enhance the user experience; provide valuable services and improve product performance.”

Between the two, the Pro is the more fascinating model, and it’s actually the “main” one. It’s got a 6-inch screen against the Mate 10’s 5.9-inch display but with narrower bezels on all sides. They’re not remarkably different from each other, however.

On the front of the Mate 10 Pro, there’s no home button, meaning the fingerprint scanner has been relocated to back, just below the vertical dual cameras. The Mate 10, meanwhile, still has a home button, which also acts as the fingerprint scanner.

The Mate 10 Pro has a resolution of 2,160 x 1,080, which is oddly lower than the Mate 10’s 2,560 x 1,440 resolution, but CNET notes the displays don’t look noticeably different from each other.
