House of Lords British delegation concludes visit

MUSCAT: The delegation of the British House of Lords concluded their visit to the Sultanate on Wednesday, made in response to the invitation of the State Council.


The visit of the delegation, which comes within the framework of strengthening the bilateral relations between the two countries and the development of cooperation between the two councils, included meetings with a number of officials.


During the visit, the British delegation held meetings with the State Council Chairman, Chairman of Majlis Ash’shura, the Chief of Staff of the Sultan’s Armed Forces and the Chairman of the Board of the Economic Zone Authority of Duqm, and the Chairman of the General Authority for Investment Promotion and Export Development (Ithraa).


On Wednesday, the delegation met with the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Planning Council, and the Head of the Implementation Support and Follow-up Unit.


The meeting discussed the existing bilateral relations between the Sultanate and the United Kingdom and means of enhancing the relations between the two friendly countries on various trade and investment fields.


The delegation also held discussions with members of the State Council and Majlis Ash’shura, on the various aspects of joint cooperation between the two chambers and their legislative and supervisory mechanisms. The two sides also discussed means of the developing and increasing investment volume and the mechanism of the commercial arbitration centre and how to benefit from the British experience in this field and the Sultanate’s experience in privatising some government services.


The delegation’s programme included a visit to some of the cultural and historical landmarks in the Sultanate.


The delegation visited the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque.


The delegation, headed by Jeffrey James Deer, Vice-President of the House of Lords, Baroness Francis Gertrude, Lord Igor Gedj, Baroness Simon Gerry Finn, Lord Navent Dholakia and Vice-President of the Omani-British Association Richard Muir.
