Decorating a home can be an overwhelming task for most people, what with the plethora of design choices in furniture, fabrics and wall colours. This need not be the case anymore. Here are some simple yet stylish design inspirations to create interiors that have a timeless appeal.

Create an inviting entryway

A beautiful entrance sets the tone for what one can expect in the rest of the house. Keep the entrance well-lit and free of clutter to create a welcoming feel. Consider placing a striking piece of art or an ornamental mirror anchored by a console just opposite the main door. Unique works of art provide a point of interest and will give your home an inimitable character from the moment guests step in. A mirror is a great choice if you have a small entryway as it gives the illusion of space, making the area seem larger than it actually is.

Use colour judiciously

While colour can be a great way to brighten your spirits, too much colour can tire the eyes. Select neutral shades like grey and cream for furniture, then use patterned cushions, carpets, kilims and accessories to add colour and a certain sense of warmth and cosiness to the room. These can be changed when you feel the need to refresh your décor. Similarly, curtains with striking patterns or floral designs can become outdated very quickly so choose these with care. Remember, a balanced colour scheme that connects each room creates a harmonious feeling that flows throughout the house.

Don’t be afraid

to mix and match

Don’t be in a hurry when designing your interiors. Take time to look around at what stores have to offer. Consider mixing and matching comfy arm chairs and sofas for an eclectic look instead of buying a whole set. Invest in a few pieces of furniture that will lend a quirky feel and can be used as centrepieces for the room.

Create your own

sense of style

The most important aspect to decorating your home is to ensure that it reflects who you are — your personality. Instead of buying impersonal mass-produced décor, take a good look at what you already have. Create conversation starters by using antique trays, brass vessels or wooden trunks as display pieces. Arrange fragrant candles, old picture frames or stack them up with books.

Bring the outdoors indoor

Plants add a warm welcoming feel to the home. Placing green plants indoors is a quick and easy way to accessorise spaces. Not only do they add texture and colour, they are a great way to ensure cleaner air indoors. Choose plants that are easy to care for like Areca Palms, Dracaena or Golden Pothos. You can’t go wrong with different kinds of cacti as well. These thrive in indirect light and do not need constant watering. If bringing plants indoors is not an option, try creating a focal point around your windows by placing plants on window sills and balconies.

Lastly, remember the tip that most interior designers stick by. Your home should always be evolving, just as you are. Use your creativity to make your home interesting. Simply avoid clutter and create a space that reflects your personality, one that offers you comfort and inspiration.
