MUSCAT: The Sultanate, represented by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture, will participate in the meetings of the General Assembly of the States Parties to the International Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage at its seventh session, to be held at the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on June 4-6.

The session will discuss a number of issues related to the Convention, the most important of which are the distribution of seats in the Committee according to electoral groups, the election of the members of the Bureau of the Convention and its Intergovernmental Committee. In addition, a series of resolutions on the discussion of national reports submitted by States will be decided.

The Sultanate has submitted its second national report on the implementation of the International Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and the status of the elements included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017, in addition to other resolutions related to the comprehensive framework of the Convention and the revision of its executive directives.

It is worth mentioning that the Sultanate succeeded this year in obtaining a seat in the International Evaluation Panel for Files, which is an important recognition of its role in activating its presence specifically in this Convention and in the various Unesco bodies in general. It also presented three files of elements of intangible cultural heritage, currently being studied and evaluated for inclusion in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in the coming years. — ONA
