By Lakshmi Kothaneth — MUSCAT: Jan 24 - Heavy rains on Tuesday came as a huge relief for residents of Muscat and South Sharqiyah governorates. Rain also lashed several wilayats in the northern part of Oman, according to the Public Authority for Civil Aviation. The downpour prompted the Muscat Festival organisers to cancel the activities for the day on Tuesday. The trough caused by low pressure over northern parts of the Sultanate covering Musandam and the coastal areas of Oman Sea is expected to end on Wednesday following isolated rains in the morning, especially in Musandam and South Sharqiyah. Temperatures are expected to dip further in the desert and the mountainous areas.

“The change in wind direction is what brought the trough to a close,” said the Met office. “Westerly to northwesterly moderate winds will blow over Musandam and Al Buraimi governorates and the coastal areas of Oman Sea. Light to moderate easterly to southeasterly winds will blow over the rest of the Sultanate and change gradually to light to moderate westerly to northwesterly.” Sea is expected to be moderate to rough in the coastal areas of Musandam and Oman Sea with a maximum wave height of 2.5 metres.

Meanwhile in the Muscat Governorate, Qurayat received the highest rain, followed by Al Amerat. Quemera in Dhank received the highest rainfall with 24.2 mm, followed by Yanqul with 21.2 mm and Muscat Governorate 18.2 mm. Barka in North Batinah received heavy rain on Monday night. In many areas, visibility was reduced during thundershowers. The Public Authority of Civil Defence and Ambulances has asked motorists to be cautious while driving.  Jabal Shams saw the lowest temperature of 4 degrees Celsius, with its maximum temperature at 12 degrees Celsius. Sur experienced highest temperature at 30 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 19 degrees Celsius.
