MUSCAT, Oct 3 - The Ministry of Health has dismissed reports, widely circulated via social media, purporting to claim that a fee of RO 27 will be levied against healthcare insurance with effect from 2018.

Refuting the claim in a tweet, the ministry said: “All that is being (circulated supposedly) by the Health Ministry on imposing RO 27 as health insurance fees starting from next year is incorrect.”

The discredited report, which had provoked a flurry of comments on social media, apparently stems from last week’s 11th Middle East Healthcare Insurance Conference hosted by the Capital Market Authority.

At the event, CMA Executive President Abdullah bin Salim al Salmi revealed that a proposal for the introduction of mandatory healthcare insurance had been approved by the government for implementation starting from 2018.

However, he made it abundantly clear that the measure would initially apply only to expatriates working in the private sector.
