Health Minister honours new WHO-EMRO Director-General

MUSCAT: Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Saeedi, Minister of Health, on Thursday honoured at his office Dr Ahmed bin Salim al Mandhari on being appointed as the Regional Director of World Health Organization Eastern Mediterranean Region (WHO-EMRO) which includes 22 countries.


Dr Al Saeedi expressed his gratitude to all countries that supported the Sultanate in the election process which helped in obtaining the position for Dr Al Mandhari.


Dr Al Mandhari thanked the ministry’s support and described the position as a pride for the Sultanate. He assumed his duties on June 1 for a term of five-and-half-years.


Dr Al Mandhari held the position of Director-General of Quality Assurance Centre at MoH, and had previously served as the Director- General of Sultan Qaboos University hospital (SQUH) and worked as senior consultant physician in Family Medicine and Public Health department.


Dr Al Mandhari was a member in the Higher Medical Committee, and member of the permanent committee as well as the multi-national task force that works on the various health projects such as Blood Transfusion Services, Central Documentations Management, Health Leadership Development project and Administrative Enhancement project.


He also was a member of Hospitals’ Administration councils of Royal hospital and Khoula hospital, in addition to being a member in the Higher Health Committee at SQU and MoH.


At the international level, Dr Al Mandhari held the position of interim advisory at the WHO First Global Challenge on Patient Safety, and interim advisory in WHO Education and training in Patient Safety Research.


Dr Al Mandhari graduated from Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) in 1993 with MD, and acquired post-doctoral studies from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), UK. He further received a doctorate in quality management in healthcare from University of Liverpool.


The election of the candidate affirms the efficiency of the Omani cadres and confirms the unquestioned respectability and appreciation of Oman at the international forums.


This achievement is the first-of-its-kind for the sultanate.
