Haya water is planning to experiment solar energy to operate its sewage treatment plant (STP) at the wilayat of Quariyat. “A study aimed at designing, installing and maintaining a solar power station at Quaryat is progressing”, said Hussain bin Hassan Abdulhussain, Chief Executive Officer of Haya Water.

According to him, the amount of water flowing to STPs in 2017 will be more than 56 million cubic meters, with an increase of up to 86 per cent compared to 2012.

“It is also expected that the number of beneficiaries of the wastewater service will reach 771 thousand residents by the end of 2017, more than half of the population of Muscat Governorate”, he said.

AbdulHussain was speaking at the open meeting of Haya Water under the patronage of Dr Khalid bin Salem Al Saidi, Secretary General of the Council of State and other officials.

The company is also planning to use wetlands technology that removes biological, chemical and physical contaminants from wastewater using reed roots to produce treated wastewater.

“This is in conformity with the standards of Ministerial Decision NO. 145/1993 Class A, which contributes to reducing operational cost”, he said.

Also a study is progressing on active carbon absorption technology which is designed to treat odours from wastewater networks, using active carbon to absorb the concentrations of hydrogen sulfide gas and thus purifying the air and making the surrounding environment clean.

The amount of treated wastewater reached 127 million cubic meters during the period from 2012-2017 and this have led to saving RO 203 million to our government which would have been spent on desalination of seawater.

“As a result, fresh water production has reduced CO2 emissions associated with the seawater desalination process”, he said.

According to him, the company is in the process of implementing 18 projects in Muscat Governorate with total cost of RO 500 million.

Many of these projects are in Willaiyat Bausher with three main projects and total value of RO 64 million.

One of these projects is the expansion of Al Ansab STP, which aims to increase the capacity of the current level to 125,000 cubic meters per day by the end of 2017.

The number of STPs in Muscat Governorate is 10 with a capacity of 189,874 cubic meters per day. These STPs are connected to wastewater networks with a length of 1,904 km, while there is about 1,876 km under implementation. The length of existing treated wastewater networks is about 319 km, while there is about 44.46 km that is still under construction.

Haya Water uses efficient pumps to ensure smooth flow of the wastewater to the STPs in the places where the Company faces difficulties in terms of gravity.

The number of these pumping stations is 39 scattered all over the Willaiyats of Muscat. There are also 92,000 inspection rooms all over Muscat Governorate.

In order to enhance the In-Country Value of Haya Water products as one of the economic principles adopted by the Company in its operations, Haya launched the organic fertilizer plant known as “Kala” in 2010 as one of the important production pillars supported by the sound awareness of its board of directors and executive management to protect the environment and preserve its natural resources towards a sustainable development.

In total, the value of assets in Muscat Governorate has exceeded RO 878 million to this date.

With regard to the assets in other governorates, the number of the STPs is 57, with a capacity of 73,000 cubic meters per day, connected to wastewater networks with a length of 992 km.

As in the Governorate of Muscat, there are approximately 85 pumping stations in the regional governorates with the same purpose as mentioned above.

As for the sale of treated wastewater, the number of beneficiaries reached 78 utilizing 97,351 m3/ day.

In addition, sales of Kala reached 210,322 bags by the end of November.

Haya plans to extent its the scope of the work to cover all the governorates except Dhofar and the need to rectify some of the existing wastewater assets and projects in these governorates, he added.
