Muscat, Nov 18 - Even as the Sultanate was celebrating the 47th National Day on Saturday, social media too was upbeat, with congratulatory messages pouring in for His Majesty on the occasion. All top digital handles, whether corporate, individual or government, were inundated with greetings to His Majesty apart from reviewing Oman’s progress on various fronts in the last five decades.

A shining example & inspiration for the world!” The comment was made by Emily Jane O’ Dell, who is an assistant professor/writer/adventurer, Sultan Qaboos University, and a contributor to several international magazines.

“Having lived in Oman since the mid-seventies, I understand the importance of this day. All communities living in Oman should mark this particular day as one of the most of important day in their lives,” said Trevor, a consultant who has been visiting Oman since his retirement here a decade ago.


Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s message, written in Arabic, said: “This National Day marks 47 years of achievements and reflects success under the leadership of brother His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.”


All landmark buildings in the neighbouring Kuwait, Qatar and UAE celebrated the National Day through illuminations that resembled Oman’s national flag.


Most messages and posts on social media focused on wishing a long and healthy life for His Majesty Sultan Qaboos.


In the past few weeks, all major airlines operating out of Oman have been offering discounts on tickets booked on the day. Oman Air was offering a discount of 47 per cent. Not to be left behind, even retailers were offering sales promotions centred on 47 per cent.


A leading retailer was offering a discount of 47 per cent on all items purchased on Saturday.
