By Yahya Al Salmani — MUSCAT: Jan 17 - The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque located in the heart of Muscat Governorate ranks as one of the top tourist attractions in the country drawing visitors from different parts of the world.

The mosque, which can accommodate 20,000 workshippers, receives hundreds of visitors every morning. Completed in 2001, it took six years to build the mosque which covers an area of 416,000 square metres.

A total of 300,000 tonnes of sandstone has been used in the construction of the Grand Mosque, whose main entrance has three high arches. A 4,263-square metre colourful carpet adorns the main prayer hall. The mosque is open for tourists from 8 am to 11 am for non-Muslim visitors every day except Friday. Visitors can get an ‘audio tour device’ which will help provide accurate information about the place. The visitor entrance (south) also has a shopping area, where they can get different types of gifts and publications.
