A new regulation promulgated by the Ministry of Health allows Omani doctors working in public healthcare institutions to work part-time in private hospitals. But they need to meet some conditions. Applicant should be an Omani specialising in one of the medical specialties specified by the ad hoc technical committee formed for the purpose. Only senior consultant physi-cians, consul-tant physicians and senior specialist physicians working for the government will be allowed to work in private hospitals. They should obtain approval from the Minister of Health based on the recommendation of the technical committee.
In exceptional cases, non-Omani (expatriate) doctors at the level of senior consultant physician or consultant physician can get approval from the minister. Applicants should have completed one year in a medical job at a public healthcare institution (less than a year for Omani doctors) from the date of becoming senior consultant physicians or consultant physicians. Applicant should not have received a notice or subjected to penalty for job-related reasons within a year from the application date. Regulations stipulate the formulation of an ad hoc technical committee tasked with specifying certain medical specialties entitled to permits.
The permit is valid for a year and can be renewed 30 days before its expiry. The permit allows provision of medical consultation, medical service, performing surgery, medical examination and patient home visits. Doctors with a permit will be allowed to work for one medical institution in accordance with the specified timings. Doctors who meet the conditions can obtain a second permit to work for a private medical institution provided it is located outside the governorate where he/she works and during weekends (weekly offs) and leaves. The general conditions also apply in this case.
