Girl dies in Salalah; Mekunu set to make landfall soon

Salalah: A 12-year-old girl succumbed to injuries following the wall collapse of her house in Ayn Sahalnoot, Salalah, due to strong winds and rains preceding the cyclone Mekunu. This is the first reported casualty in the current weather conditions.


The authorities have urged people to take utmost caution and not to venture out of their homes.



In the Warning 6 bulletin , PACA said the cyclone centre is located 57km away from Salalah city with a wind speed ranging between 85 to 90 knots.


The Sea state will be rough in Dhofar and Al Wusta with a wave height of 8 to 12 meters causing floods in low lying levels due to rising sea levels, while in the South Sharqiyah it will be around 3 to 5 metres.

The National Multi Hazard and Early Warning Centre said in a latest statement that Cyclone Mekunu has intensified into Category 2 with a wind speed ranging between 85 to 90 knots.


In its latest bulletin (Warning 5), the centre said the cyclone is located 150km away from the Salalah City and the main convective clouds band is 40km from the coasts.


The main convective clouds band is expected to reach the coastal areas of Dhofar on Friday morning accompanied by strong winds and rainfall in the 200 to 600 mm and flash floods.
