GCC Traffic Week from today

MUSCAT: The Sultanate will today join the other GCC states to mark the 33rd GCC Traffic Week which will be held under the theme ‘Your Life is a Trust’. Since its inception in 1984, the GCC Traffic Week has been celebrated simultaneously across the region with a view to exchange experiences and expertise between the member states. Traffic authorities’ delegations will visit each other and exchange the latest initiatives, regulations, legislative procedures and traffic practices. Seminars and discussions will be held to enhance traffic security and reduce road accidents in the member states.

The topics of the seminars include “Towards a unified media strategy to spread traffic awareness”, “Role of community participation in reducing traffic accidents”, “Role of old and new media in spreading traffic awareness”, “Role of infrastructure in traffic” and “Role of women in spreading traffic awareness”. The Traffic Week is aimed at spreading traffic awareness and culture among road users. This year’s theme underscores the importance of abiding by the traffic rules to preserve our lives for the sake of our families and our nations. Engineer Khalid bin Hilal al Busaidy, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Interior will preside over the opening of the traffic exhibition at Muscat City Centre.


Maj Gen (retd) Mohammed bin Abdullah al Riyami will preside over the opening of the traffic exhibition at Muscat Grand Mall in the evening.


Brig Gen Mohammed bin Awadh al Rawas, Director-General of Traffic said that many achievements have taken place during the previous period including using modern technologies to boost traffic safety, upgrading traffic systems and increasing traffic patrols on the roads. Consequently, road accidents went down by more than 50 per cent in 2016 compared with 2012.
