GCC club basketball meet from May 6-14

Muscat, may 2 - The GCC Club Basketball championship will be held in Muscat from May 6-14, it was announced by the organising committee of the championship. The committee also unveiled the logo of the championship at the press conference held at the Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) headquarters on Wednesday. “We would like to welcome all the participating GCC teams in the championship. We hope all teams achieve their best technical performance,” Khalfan al Naabi, chairman of Nizwa club, said.


“We have completed all the preparations for this championship. Thanks to the Ministry of Sports Affairs and Oman Basketball Association’s support for this event,” Al Naabi added.


“There are many committees that comprise the main organising committee for GCC Club basketball championship like media and public relations, statistics, secretariat.” chairman of Nizwa Club mentioned.


“The GCC Club Basketball Championship is an opportunity to gain entry to Asian GCC Championship and then to world clubs Championship. Therefore, it is one of the important tournaments,” Farid al Zadjali, chairman of Oman Basketball Association, said.


“Thanks to Nizwa club to host this Championship as the host club although there were some difficulties and a short time to prepare for this event,” Farid added.


The logo of the championship reflects Oman’s culture and showcases the Nizwa fort. The logo comprises Nizwa word in ‘Arabic’ and the YEAR OF 2018 to represent of 8 teams participating and 38th edition of championship.


Sayyid Sulieman al Busaidi will preside over the opening ceremony while Mohammed bin Salim al Toobi, Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs will be the chief guest for final ceremony. Eight clubs will participate in the competition divided into two groups.The first group comprises Ahli Dubai from the UAE, Al Muharraq from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia’s Al Etihad and Al Arabi from Qatar.


The host Nizwa Club will be part of the second group along with Al Sharjah from the UAE, Al Manama from Bahrain and Al Rayyan from Qatar.
