Russia’s Gazprom saw natural gas shipments to countries outside the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) hit a record high this week, owing to cold weather in Europe. In a statement, the state-controlled company reported that its non-CIS customers had taken delivery of 621.8 mcm of Russian gas on January 8. This represented a rise of more than 1 per cent on the previous daily high of 615.5 mcm, which was recorded on January 6. It was also the highest daily figure ever reported for exports to the far abroad, Gazprom said.

Most of the additional volumes appear to be flowing through Nord Stream, a pipeline that runs across the Baltic Sea from northwestern Russia to northeastern Germany. Gazprom noted in its statement that Nord Stream had seen throughput rise from 160.75 mcm per day as of January 1 to the record high level of 165.2 mcm per day as of January 4-8.

Delivery volumes have been on the rise since the beginning of the year because of low temperatures in Europe and other factors, the statement said. “We have reached a totally new level of gas exports in conditions of a cold snap, lower extraction volumes in Europe and higher demand for gas on the energy market,” Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller was quoted as saying.

Miller also stated on January 9 that Gazprom had also succeeded in increasing gas shipments to non-CIS countries last year. The company exported 179 bcm of Russian gas in 2016, marking an approximately 12.5 per cent increase on the 2015 figure of 158.56 bcm, he said.

The jump was a positive achievement for Gazprom, he commented. “This is an amount not seen in the Soviet Union, or even in the days of modern Russia,” he said.

He also asserted that the rise in exports reflected Gazprom’s position as a key supplier of energy on world markets. “The record result demonstrates the significant increase in demand for Russian gas in Europe and our ability to ensure that it is exported in the desired volume,” he said.  [NewsBase.com]
