Forum sheds light on SQU research projects supported by internal grants

MUSCAT: Sultan Qaboos University, represented by the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Postgraduate Studies and Research, held the second Internal Grants Research Forum on December 13, under the auspices of HH Dr Fahd bin al Julanda Al Said, Assistant Secretary General for Innovation Development at the Research Council.


The forum is part of the university’s efforts to develop a rich research culture in the Sultanate in addition to raising awareness about scientific accomplishments at the university.


The forum provided a valuable opportunity for researchers to offer overviews of the projects they have received Internal Grant support for, including presenting their progress and achievements, research output, innovations, and other deliverables.


Prof Abdullah bin Khamis Ambusaidi, Dean of the Deanship of Postgraduate Studies and a professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the College of Education, gave a brief presentation on his research project “Investigating the image of the Omani teacher in society in light of some variables”.


Dr Ahmed Mohammed Shabib Hassan, a faculty member from the Department of Psychology, College of Education, presented his research project on “Educational needs of SQU students according to college and study level”.


Prof Munir Abdullah Karadsha, a researcher from the university’s Humanities Research Center, presented his research project on “Omani society’s orientations towards some preferred professions for women”.


Dr Shadia bint Mohammed Al Bahlaniya, a faculty member from the Department of Allied Health Sciences, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, gave a presentation on “Chemoresistance in Breast Cancer: The Role of Calpain 1 in Cisplatin-induced Apoptosis”.


Dr Gerald Matwa Amandu, from the Fundamentals and Administration Department in the College of Nursing, gave a presentation on the “Perceptions and experiences of preceptors of clinically mentoring final year nursing students at SQU University Hospital”.


Dr Kamla bint Ali Al Busaidy, from the Department of Information Systems, College of Economics and Political Science, presented her research project entitled “Boosting Oman’s Transformation to Knowledge Economy through Information and Communications Technologies”.


Dr Michael James Barry, from the Department of Biology, College of Science, also gave a presentation on his research project, “Risk assessment of metallic nanoparticles in Omani freshwater ecosystems”.


Dr Rashid bin Abdullah Al Yahyaei, Dean of the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences, updated the audience about his project “Agroecology of Date Palm Farms in Oman”. The study examined the agricultural ecology of traditional farming systems, particularly those relevant to date palm and the under story fruit and other plants.
