By Kabeer Yousuf — MUSCAT: Jan. 8 - Vehicular movement around the Muscat International Airport is smooth, thanks to opening of the flyover near Irfan Roundabout, which was closed for traffic for some time now. The Royal Oman Police (ROP) opened it on Sunday in the presence of Muscat Municipality officials. Some more works will continue for two more months. They would be completed by March, according to sources in Muscat Municipality. “This is part of the first phase of design and construction of the intersection project linking Muscat International Airport and adjacent streets and roads, which will help streamline traffic in the area,” said an official.

The project is expected to ease traffic in both directions. “It is designed according to the highest engineering standards and traffic safety.” The project is in accordance with a comprehensive traffic study conducted for the Muscat Governorate, which includes the preparation of a comprehensive plan for dealing with traffic in the short, medium and long term. It includes the construction of a 135-metre-long overpass as a substitute for the Irfan Roundabout. It connects to Muscat International Airport bridge to allow vehicular access to the highway and back with two lanes in each direction. At a later stage, it will have five lanes in each direction, besides a pathway for pedestrian movement.
