Oman’s aviation sector is all set to receive another qualitative addition with Qatar Airways (QA) launching its inaugural flight to Sohar Airport on August 8.

The airport, the third international airport after Muscat and Salalah and managed by managed by Oman Airports Management Company (OAMC), has already received its maiden international flight from Sharjah by Air Arabia on July 9.

The airline started with three flights-a-week service to Suhar from Sharjah.

Qatar Airways will also operate three weekly flights from Doha to Suhar.

Oman’s first budget airline SalamAir started thrice-a-week Salalah-Suhar flights from June 28. The airport, with a capacity to receive 250,000 passengers annually, is expected to connect the Sultanate to more international destinations in the coming years apart from serving as a local alternative destination in any emergency situations.

The airport will also help increase passenger traffic from the Governorate of North Al Batinah, which is witnessing higher growth in the number of passengers.

“Connecting Sohar Airport to international destinations will enhance the growth of the industrial base in the city and will increase their competitiveness,” said Sameer bin Saleh al Abri, Director of Sohar Airport, OAMC.

By launching the first QA flight, the number of weekly flights from and to Sohar Airport will increase to nine, three of them for SalamAir from and to Salalah Airport in the Governorate of Dhofar, three for Air Arabia from and to Sharjah International Airport and three for QA from and to Doha International Airport.
