First-of-its-kind endowment initiative launched

MUSCAT: The Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs launched on Monday the Awqaf Charity Organizations Scheme under the auspices of Sayyid Hamoud bin Faisal al Busaidy, Minister of Interior, in the presence of His Eminence Shaikh Ahmed bin Hamed al Khalili, the Grand Mufti of the Sultanate. The scheme crowns the efforts made throughout the past twenty years to come out with an integrated vision, as well as administrative, legal and legislative system. In a statement to reporter, the Grand Mufti said that the waqf is an important requirement at the same time as the progress made should be coupled with a growth in charity work, with awqaf charity work on its foremost.

He pointed out that the initiative, which is the first its kind at the level of the Islamic World, reflects our good preparation for the future and to have a charitable and beneficial scheme for the nation. He hoped that the initiative would bring benefits to the Omani society and other societies as well. The idea of the project is a cultural initiative that is the first of its kind in terms of structure and strategy in the Islamic world as it provides society with the opportunity to have real partnership in the management of awqaf charity organization under the supervision of the Ministry.

The project aims at activating and enhancing the efficiency of the charity society through the introduction of awqaf organizations by providing a new vision for awqaf and zakat which meet the current needs of the people. The project will provide a novel ideal for the charity organisations which allow utilising its available resources in ensuring the development of society. It opens awqaf  horizons with modern vision for philanthropists. It also ensures executive independence for the awqaf organizations and helps ensure optimum utilisation of its energies and human resources in society. — ONA
