Fatma storms into Pune ITF semis

Star Omani tennis player Fatma al Nabhani stunned the Chinese top seed Jia-Jing Lu 6-4, 7-6 (6) to storm into the singles semifinals of the ITF $25,000 NECC-Deccan ITF Pro Circuit Tournament in the western Indian city of Pune on Thursday. Fatma will meet fourth seed Katy Dunne of Great Britain in the semifinal on Friday. Dunne beat fifth seed Ganna Poznikhirenko of Ukraine 7-6(4), 7-5 to make it to the last four.


In the second semifinal, Olga Doroshina of Russia will clash with second seed Georgina Garcia-Perez of Spain. Doroshina ended the challenge of Indian girl Rutuja Bhosale 6-4, 6-4, while Garcia-Perez accounted for another local player Karman Kaur Thandi 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.


Fatma entered the quarters with a 6-2, 6-4 thrashing of Ukraine’s Anastasiya Vasylyeva.


The Omani girl, who as a lucky loser from the qualifying round created an upset by defeating sixth-seeded Latvia’s Diana Marcinkevica in the first round.


In the doubles competition, the challenge of Fatma and Jia-Jing ended in the first round on Monday when they went down fighting 6-2, 5-7 (10-8) to Russian fourth seeds Olga Doroshina and Anna Morgina.
