Fatma storms into last 16

Muscat, August 20 - Oman beach volleyball team continued its winning ways in the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia with a victory against Hong Kong on Monday.  Star tennis player Fatma al Nabhani stormed into the last 16 when she beat Iranian player Ghazal Bakpaten. Shooting team disappointed with no one qualifying to the next round whereas hockey team missed out against Bangladesh 2-1 in the opening match.


In beach volleyball, Oman ‘A’ featuring Mazin al Hashmi and Nouh al Jalbobi defeated Hong Kong pair of Kam Long and Young Bok 2-0. Oman claimed first set 21-10 and wrapping up the second 21-15.


Meanwhile, Oman ‘B’ comprising Haitham al Shuraiqi and Ahmed al Hosni won their first match against Chinese Taipei pair 2-1.


In tennis, Fatma easily beat Iran’s Ghazal 6-0, 6-4 in the women’s singles to move into the last 16 round. On Sunday, Oman won the mixed team event when Fatma and Mohammed al Nabhani won against Sri Lankan pair of Anika and Ranjana 6-4, 6-3.


In hockey, Oman missed many scoring opportunities in the third and fourth quarters as Bangladesh prevailed 2-1. Oman will play against Pakistan on Wednesday. In other matches, South Korea thrashed Hong Kong 11-0, while Japan drubbed Sri Lanka with the same score and Pakistan sank Thailand 10-0.


In the shooting arena, Oman’s Isam al Balushi was positioned at 32th place as he scored 611.1 points only in 10 metres rifle shooting competitions. Amina al Tarshi scored 610.5 points to finish at 30th place in the same category of competitions for women. Siham al Hasani recorded 610 points and finished at 30th place. None of the Omani shooters qualified to the next round.
