Photography is not only a very strong medium of expression but has emerged as an art form with a long history. Even artists from other fields have felt that the reality of photography is stronger than reality itself

More than A treat to the eyes, these pictures on display at the Salalah Hall of College of Applied Sciences, are a chronicle of the wonder that is Dhofar.

“All of them are superb. These are the pictures which tell thousand stories and if you ask a photo admirer like me to judge I would give first prize to all the 93 photographs put on display here. I do not have much of technical knowledge about photography. To me none of the pictures are inferior... that makes me understand the difficulty of the jury in categorising them as first, second and third...,” said a visitor in her honest comment.

As the title of the exhibit suggested, ‘Dhofar Lens’ features college students’ works. Most of the visitors have been awestruck after watching these stills on tradition, culture, flora and fauna of the governorate.

“I was not sure a college event done by the students would be so professionally managed. I entered the hall with a casualness of attending some routine college event. But I was surprised by the works of the students... the photographs, exhibition setting and students’ presentation — everything was perfect,” said Dr Khalid Muqaibal.

All the visitors were surprised to know that the works of art were done not by professional photographers but by the learners and there were many who were handling the camera for the sake of hobby only.

“Yes there are participants from our college who are learning photography and there are many who are in other streams but playing with the cameras very nicely. I appreciate their sense for photography,” said Dr Vandana Jyotirmayee, Head of the Department CAS, Salalah.

She admitted that the entries were so nice that it was very difficult for the jury to adjudge the best ones. “But the good thing was good participation from the local colleges.”

Commenting on photography as a skill, Dr Vandana said: “photography is not only a very strong medium of expression but has emerged as an art form with a long history. Even artists from other fields have felt that the reality of photography is stronger than reality itself.”

Jeniffer Ball summed up the exhibition as “a collection of outstanding photographs in which way of life in Dhofar was truly reflected. I really appreciate the students’ skills in doing the pictures and displaying them so nicely in the form of an exhibition.”
