Experts discuss healing powers of frankincense

SALALAH: The first international frankincense and Medicinal Plants Symposium was held at the Dhofar University with the participation of scientists and specialists from international institutes and universities. The symposium was held under the auspices of Sayyid Mohammed bin Sultan al Busaidy, Minister of State and Governor of Dhofar, in the presence of Abdul Aziz bin Mohammed al Rowas, His Majesty the Sultan’s Adviser for Cultural Affairs, member of Trustee Board of Dhofar University, and a number of dignitaries and officials.


Dr Hassan bin Said Kashoob, President of Dhofar University, delivered a speech in which he referred to the participation of a number of scientists with expertise in the field of frankincense to exchange views and ideas on the use of frankincense extracts.


He stressed the University’s keenness to benefit from the Omani frankincense based on the interest in the frankincense tree as a national treasure, which was famous for the Sultanate and the Governorate of Dhofar in particular.


The symposium discussed the possibility of using Omani frankincense ingredients as effective treatments, new techniques of new discovery from frankincense in Oman to produce new products. It also discussed new strategy for treatment of diseases caused by bacteria resistant to antibiotics using Omani frankincense and review of chemical studies conducted on frankincense. — ONA
