Expert says rainwater can be used for irrigation purposes

MUSCAT, MAY 26 - Cyclone Mekunu which hit Dhofar Governorate for three days has resulted in large quantities of rainwater. The rainfall station of the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources recorded the highest amount of water in the Dhofar Governorate on Friday and Saturday.  Salalah received 505 mm, Taqah 250 mm, Rakhyout 192 mm, Mirbat 213 mm, Thamrit 157 mm, Al Mazyouna 61 mm, Shaleem and Al Hilaniyat 28 mm of rainwater between Friday and Saturday. This large quantity of rainwater can be used for a number of productive purposes and irrigation is one among the many, besides supporting vegetation in a big way.


Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW), Muscat. The day before, from 8 pm on May 24 till 7 am on May 25, Salalah recorded 10.8 mm of rainwater while Taqah received 2.8 mm, Rakhyout (1.4 mm), Central Jazer (5 mm), and Adam province record rainfall of (14 mm), according to the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources. The Wilayat of Sadah received the highest rainfall of 23.3 mm in 24 hours’ time.

“We have a number of dams to preserve water and store for future purposes while the rest of the portion will be used to support vegetation around the areas”, Al Arafati added. Experts suggest rainwater can actually be good for human consumption. Oman can also use this huge reservoir of water for lawns, gardens, houseplants, for compost, livestock and growing vegetables, according to him.
