MUSCAT, Nov 6 - Social media has showered praise on expatriates who saved two Arab women from drowning at the Al Khuwair beach last week.

Eyewitnesses said had these young swimmers not been there, the incident could have had a tragic end.

“They risked their lives to save the women. We will honour them for their bravery,” Rekha Premraj, an active blogger, wrote.

It all happened when Daniel, Jinu, Vasudev and Nirmal, all employees of Kone Assarain, a private firm, along with friends, Binoj Chamy, Dilraj and twin brother Dinaker, went to the Al Khuwair beach for a swim around 5.30 pm. “Not far from us, we saw a woman shouting for help while pointing at two other women who were drowning,” said Dilraj.

“At first, we were hesitant thinking it was a prank.”

Soon they realised it wasn’t. Immediately, Daniel rushed towards the women, held the drowning woman by her hair, while she was firmly holding her elder sister.

On finding that, the elder woman too was drowning, friends joined in and managed to pull both of them to safety. The rescuers also received some help from Omani youngsters.

The women were administered first-aid and shifted to a hospital. Later, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) officials rushed to the spot.
