By Staff Reporter — MUSCAT:  Dec. 3: An Open Day was organised by the Oman Diabetes Association (ODA) to mark the World Diabetes Day. The event was held at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex under the theme, ‘Together we Fight Diabetes’. It was presided over by His Highness Sayyid Taimur bin Asaad al Said, Assistant Secretary-General for Communication at the Research Council. It was attended by Dr Ahmad bin Mohammad al Saeedi, Minister of Health, and Dr Haji Zulkarnain bin Haji Hanafi, Health Minister of Brunei Darussalam.

The event was aimed at raising awareness and educating the public about the disease prevention methods. More than 650 people from public and private schools participated in this exercise. Dr Noor al Busaidi, Chairperson of ODA and Director of the National Diabetes & Endocrine Centre, said diabetes is the “most common disease in the civilised world, especially in the Gulf Region”. The disease prevalence rate among adults in the Sultanate has reached 15 per cent, according to the International Diabetes Federation’s latest report. Dr Al Busaidi said the healthcare services delivered to the diabetics contribute significantly in reducing occurrence of the disease and early complications.
