MUSCAT: The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) has prepared a number of regulations in accordance with the requirements of international agreements concerning the qualification, training and licensing of various categories of seafarers.

The Sultanate, represented by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, has taken a positive step in this regard in preparation for the signing of memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the European Union (EU) countries for the recognition of maritime certificates of competence. Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with those countries will facilitate non-Omani seafarers to work on Omani vessels and Omani seafarers to work on vessels of those countries and to recognize the certificates issued to them by the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

The recognition is part of the efforts of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, represented by the Directorate General of Maritime Affairs to upgrade its services internationally. It has completed the procedures to enter into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the mutual recognition of the certificates of seafarers working on ships with Arab and foreign countries including the EU member states.

The recognition came after a visit by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) team, representing the EU countries to the Sultanate and verifying the system of training and certification of seafarers in the Sultanate to ensure their compliance with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the EU in this regard.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications, represented by the Directorate General of Maritime Affairs, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the mutual recognition of the certificates of seafarers working on ships with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Marshall Islands, as well as with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The Sultanate’s accreditation, represented by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, has recently been renewed in the White List of IMO, which complies with international standards for the qualification, training and licensing of seafarers. — ONA
