The Environment Society of Oman (ESO), in collaboration with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), continues to spread awareness of sustainable practices through a campaign designed to inspire the next generation to be responsible environmental stewards.

The ESO Education Program, started in 2016 and aims to cover over 100 middle schools in several governorates, empowering thousands of students aged between 11 and 14 years old with knowledge of conservation techniques, sustainable practices, climate change and the importance of biodiversity.

The 2016 Education Program covered the themes of ‘Energy Saving’ and ‘Oman’s Biodiversity,’ to be followed in 2017 with ‘Ecological Footprint’ and ‘Green Schools’.

ESO will also be hosting its 4th Eco Summer programme in July 2017, engaging children and students in environmentally-themed games, art and activities.

With the help of volunteers, ESO’s Education Program features highly interactive presentations, games, class discussions, field trips and competitions.

Jawaher al Ghafri, Education Coordinator at ESO, said, “Educating our children on the importance of protecting their environment, empowers them to play an integral role in making our schools, communities and planet a healthier place for us all.

The Education Program is a great opportunity for students across the Sultanate to learn about the natural environment and how best to preserve it.

Through this initiative and many others we are equipping the future of Oman to be leaders in sustainability.”

Suleiman bin Mohammed al Mantheri, PDO’s External Affairs and Communications Manager, said, “We are proud of our Social Investment programme which is directed to the local communities and the Society at large. We are also pleased to work with ESO in bringing environmental education to children throughout the Sultanate.

This programme is part of our continued efforts to implement projects that benefit the society, joining a long list of community-based initiatives that have empowered the youth of Oman with knowledge and opportunities. It’s also part of our programme to support the various NGOs in Oman to help them achieve their mission and ambitions towards the society.”
