English language teaching conference begins

MUSCAT: Oman 17th International ELT (English Language Teaching) Conference, organised by the Centre for Preparatory Studies at Sultan Qaboos University, commenced on Thursday under the auspices of Dr Darwish bin Saif al Maharbi, Under-Secretary for Administrative and Financial Affairs at the Ministry of Health. This year’s conference theme is ‘ELT: Innovate, integrate, motivate”.


Dr Badria al Shihi, Director of Centre for Preparatory Studies at SQU said the annual Oman ELT Conference provided excellent opportunities for sharing ideas, experiences and best practices in different areas of English Language Teaching.


“It is an exciting, stimulating and rewarding annual event for ELT professionals in all sectors. This year’s conference aims to be relevant to the fast changing context of ELT and to provide opportunities for reflection to act as a catalyst for exploring innovative ways of thinking about and teaching in the field of ELT. The theme, ‘ELT: Innovate, integrate, motivate’ invites us to share best practices, consider strategies to encourage engagement for all stakeholders in ELT and to promote learner autonomy. The theme can be explored via practical, theoretical or research strands”, she said.


Dr Khalfan al Kemyani, Conference Chairman, said that the two-day conference features 67 presentations delivered by 77 presenters who come from 38 institutions from different countries. Presentations will discuss 19 sub-themes derived from the main theme of “Innovate, Integrate and Motivate” in the field of ELT. These presentations include one plenary speech, two featured speeches, three poster presentations, 15 workshops and three specialized professional development workshops”, he said.


The conference is accompanied by a specialized ELT material exhibition, which provides an opportunity to bring some of the well-known international publishers in the field. There is a section for Centre for Preparatory Studies’ in-house publications and teaching materials.
