MUSCAT, June 7 - The Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances (PACDA) has warned against keeping some electrical appliances on throughout the night which might trigger a fire. A PACDA official said since the month of Ramadhan has longer nights, people tend to oversleep with the electrical appliances switched on. Speaking to the Observer after a fire incident in Al Khuwair on Tuesday in which three people were injured, he said people around commercial and residential premises should take precautions against such mishaps.

The latest fire incident is apparently a “result of negligence”, according to PACDA, which said inflammable materials stored in the shop magnified the problem.

“During Ramadhan, it is common to see lot of cooking activity before sunrise and after sunset, making kitchens prone to accidents. Therefore, safety at kitchens is important.”

While asking people not to leave kitchens unattended and take more care when frying since hot oil can set off fires, the official said smoke sensors will help safeguard you and your valuables.

“House fires are caused by a series of incidents or accidents. From candles and cigarettes to faulty appliances and overloaded sockets, households are a hive of fire hazards.”

These devices need to be checked to make sure they are suitable for use. When switched on, they should be kept away from paper rolls, curtains and other flammable materials.

Likewise, never place any metal in a microwave, he said. Interestingly, the official said, any accumulated fat or grease in the grills and ovens can potentially cause a fire.
