MUSCAT: As part of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos’s attention to promote the Sultanate’s march of comprehensive development and to provide all opportunities for youth to benefit from their potential and develop their capabilities, the Council of Ministers dedicated a special session on January 24 to follow up efforts being exerted in the field of employment for holders of certificates from public and private educational institutions and vocational training institutions. The Council of Ministers voiced confidence in the ability of Omani youth to gain expertise in the work that they are doing.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Council of Ministers gave its full support to the employment of Omani youth — whether in the public sector or the private sector or through entrepreneurship initiatives — and to offer them work that rises up to the level of their qualifications. “In turn, the government is working hard to recruit the young people of this country in different sectors,” said the statement, adding that the government “has contributed positively to backing the private sector and its investment projects” and that the government provided all means for the private sector so that it could better help diversify the economy and provide more jobs in all its establishments for Omanis.

“While reviewing this issue, the Council of Ministers found the availability of many employment opportunities in the country,” said the statement, which confirmed the existence of promising economic sectors that received full support to promote employment. “These sectors have to shoulder their responsibilities,” said the statement. Referring to the employment of Omanis, His Highness Sayyid Fahd bin Mahmood al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for the Council of Ministers, said: “I will not allow casting doubt about the ability of Omani youth to work and gain expertise”. He pointed out that “experience is gained with on-the-job training”.

HH Sayyid Fahd confirmed that “limiting the recruitment of expatriate manpower is a responsibility that requires the cooperation of all state sectors and institutions,” noting that it is necessary to comprehend the economic and social implications of this responsibility and its direct impact on the demographic structure “for which the government works hard to achieve the desired balance.” HH Sayyid Fahd lauded the constructive role of the Council of Oman (Majlis Oman) in this respect. He also commended Omani media for raising public awareness about all that serves the public interest. Due to the developing nature of the issue of employment, the Council of Ministers has formed a ministerial committee with competent authorities to analyse and continue follow-up of the issue and to report to the Council of Ministers at the earliest, so that prompt action could be taken. — ONA
